Conceptual Term
Composition
Composition is a word often used to position the subject at a specific placement, normally used in photography. It is strategically used to either accentuate the subject matter, or to emphasise another subject matter in the photograph. I want to use composition to place certain perspectives into my design.
Angle
Angles are an important part to a perspective, whether it is at eye level, spectating from a bird’s eye view, or at an angle where one may be encouraged to bend down or tippy-toe to look at a view. However, angle can also be used to measure the slope of going upwards, or downwards. I am hoping to encourage viewers to explore my design through various angles, as opposed to only eye level.
Level
Levels have varying definitions, one being used to describe the floors within a building. Levels are also used during post-production of a photograph, experimenting with light and shadow levels to edit a photograph. I am playing on the idea of having physical levels to my design, while also thinking about how lighting may be affected on each floor.
Aperture
Aperture is a photographic term for adjusting how much light the camera absorbs while capturing a photo. It does this by opening and closing the lens’s diaphragm, and is generally written as f/stops. A larger aperture = light exposure (low 1.4 f/stop), and a lower aperture = less exposure (high 16 f/stop). Aperture is also used to play with the depth of field. I want to play on the concept of a high/low aperture, having a variety of sizes for light to come through.
Direction
The photographer is not only the person taking photos, but they are also the director, taking charge of what happens in front of the camera. As a designer, I am taking the correlation of being in charge to produce an intervention into the site that is memorable, something worth taking a (photographic) shot.
Temporal Vocabulary
Position, Adjust, View.
You stop. You look at where you’re positioned.
You bring out your device to capture your image. You adjust your settings to the conditions.
You bring your device to your eye. You now gaze through your viewfinder, taking a shot of your view.
Temporary or Permanent?
A temporary intervention, over the span of 6-12 months (so the sun can make a full circle throughout the year). I am choosing to have my design intervention temporary to prevent the design being another part of the street that becomes abandoned and unused.
Scale?
The height of the design is currently set to be at a similar height to the surrounding buildings that run along Fort Lane, in order to reach the sunlight. The width would be the current width of Fort Lane from the Fort Street side.
Script
Please film your experience through your eyes.
Have a look at your surroundings.
What do you see at eye level?
Now reposition yourself by sitting down.
What do you find yourself staring at?
Reposition yourself again on higher ground.
Be creative in how you may gain height.
What has changed about your view?
