Week 2: Scene Transitions

Models

Going along with the concept of layering and perspectives, I created models that played on using perspectives, so that the models produced different qualities when looked at from different angles. I did this while considering how the light would hit the model, and the shadows that were created in response to the light.

Model 1

I was thinking about creating a model where the perspective was changed to the view from above, creating a shape that may only be seen from a specific angle. I played on the idea of perspective, framing, and suspension.

Model 2

I decided to play with the concept of layering, as what I did with my lenses/filters from Week 1. This was inspired by primary colours being used to create secondary colours through layering. I also wanted to see the colours being reflected into the shadows.

Model 3

Keeping the layering and shadows consistent, I wanted to see how shadows would play through a series of layers with “obstacles”, the crisscrossing of shadows and lighting, also inspired by my lenses from Week 1.

Refined Model

I took aspects from each model I created above and used them as a guide to create my refined model. I used the pinhole camera as an inspiration for my model:

After drawing out my rough sketches, I created my model with some black polypropene sheets, red cellophane, and white foamboard. I also used electrical tape to secure the edges. I decided to use black as a resemblance to a pinhole camera, and red to tie in the prominence of red in Fort Lane, while also paying homage to the concept of a dark room. I used white foamboard as it reminded me of my experience of using white photo paper to print my images through a pinhole camera.
