Week 3: Critiquing

Tuesday

We discussed what critiquing is, and the purpose of it. Why do we need to critique? What do we learn from critiques?

What is a critque for?

  • A critique can be used to share ideas, to improve our work
  • Constructive feedback that you can learn/build from

What makes a good critique?

  • When people offer insight into my work and comment on things I would’ve never noticed
  • People taking the time to actually look into your work, and making constructive comments on the work
  • Suggesting ways to move forward, not redoing the entire work

What makes a difficult critique?

  • Comments with no context: “That looks cool” “You could do it better”
  • When people don’t study/examine your work properly, and make critiques based on their limited knowledge on your work.

Practical Rules for Critiquing:

  • Honesty
  • Respect
  • Curiosity

Thursday

On Thursday brought in 5 of our best documents, and we were put into groups to share our documents and discuss our work, while critiquing each others work. Critiques I received from my group:

  • Could consider your space from a designers perspective and redesign the space? Think about the colour palette?
  • How would the cafe function if there were added functions to the space? How would it interact with the environment?
  • Look into the structure of the cafe & the beanbags. What atmosphere does it create?
  • Mapping out the social aspects
  • Talk about the surrounding points of interest: e.g. One Tree Hill, Cornwall Park itself. The Cafe is only able to exist because of these factors.
