Week 11: Further Development

Stage 2 Update

Taking the feedback from the co-design workshop, I completed my design for my Fort Lane folly, which is located outside Imperial Lane & The Jefferson. At first I had only thought about showing points of interest (POI) through curated panels alone, but I decided to deliberately design my folly in a way that it becomes an extension of the existing POI’s. So when entering/exiting Imperial Lane or Jefferson, one has to pass through the folly to get to their destination.

Artificial Lights into the follies

Another thing I had to consider was the lighting at night time. I did not think the existing light sources were enough to light up the folly, as I thought it was quite dark during my site visits. However, I wanted subtlety in my lighting use, in a way it did not disrupt the existing lighting.

Fort Lane at night.

I thought to use tubular lighting in the entrances of the folly, as a way to invite viewers to climb into the folly. I also have to think about putting lights in places where it was necessary for safety reasons.

I wanted to use the lights on certain platforms as well, to give the platforms a more “stage-like presence”. It would feel like being in a lightbox without a physical barrier, and could highlight the skeleton of scaffolding.

When adding lights into my design, I couldn’t decide whether red lights would be more immersive, or white lights. I felt that red lights would intensify the saturation, and it reminded me of the initial concept of being in a darkroom (in photography). The white lights on the other hand would be more effective as “framing” parts of the scaffold, as well as letting the materiality of the panels shine a bit more.

I decided to ask our guest designer Anna Manson again for some feedback on my lighting, and she suggested if I wanted to keep the “framing”, I could possibly use white powdercoated scaffolding on certain areas to highlight parts of my folly, because using red lighting intensifies the red panels.
