Week 9: Developing Interventions – Coffee Booth

This week I will be focusing on my coffee booth with the help of Andrew’s feedback, and it is one of the aspects of my design with the most human interaction.
I decided to add a coffee booth in the space to add functionality to my walkway design. I had done some research on the surrounding site, and noticed there wasn’t a cafe relatively close. I was thinking about people who work around the site, and thought it would be convenient to not only open up the space as an installation walkway, but to also add in the convenience of grabbing a coffee on the go.

The location of the booth on the floor plan.

Andrew’s Feedback

  • Considering how to further emphasise time?
  • How to embody the era of the site; also in relation to time (bringing it back to what it used to be?)
  • Playing and creating on the idea of coffee culture: pulling on certain aspects and taking it to the extreme
  • Consider how people in the space wait for their coffee. Where are they facing, their orientation, their placement?
  • Playing on people waiting for coffee = time passing
  • How to slow down to exaggerate time

Ceili’s Feedback

  • How do people think & feel in the space?
  • Make models to explore, sketch ideas (just do, don’t think, let yourself spend only 10-30mins per modelling/drawing)
  • Using natural/artificial lighting that shows the time of day
  • Think about your Artist Model -> How do they show lighting throughout the day
  • (Light has a different brightness throughout the day (e.g. light is strongest during the day, weakest in the evening, etc)

Direction Placement

I decided to sketch up the placement of my booth, to think about how the orientation of customers and their placements in the space when waiting.

Applying the diagrams in the floor plan for a better idea:

Parallel
Pros: Booth is linear to the rest of the space
Cons: Not too keen on having an open space on the side facing the stairs

L-shaped
Pros: An improvement of the Parallel placement, keeps the linear direction
Cons: Looks too closed in

Adjacent
Pros:
There is a bigger “waiting” area as opposed to the Parallel placement
Cons:
Does not follow the linear direction of the space

Conclusion: I decided to go for the L-shaped placement, as I wanted to cover both directions of the corner. However I will have to think about how to make it look less “closed in”.

Booth Ideas

I did 4 quick sketches of designs I could use, while trying to think of different ways to add certain aspects to my designs:

Design #1

I liked the menu in this design, as the shadows and lighting gives it more dimension than just a 2D design. However I would like the display cabinet to blend more in the counter, as it feels too cluttered. I also want to experiment with the LED strip lights on the counter.

Design #2

I prefer the subtlety of the display cabinet as opposed to design #1. I did not like the menu in design #2, as it is too flat and difficult to see for customers. It does make the wall less “cluttered” however. I tried using LED tape on the shelves instead, and it brings more attention to the wall.

Design #3

Putting the menu on a board on the wall is simple and straightforward, but I felt it was still flat. I kept the display cabinet the same, but in a different side of the counter. I also went back to putting LED on the counter to see how that would look (it would also align to the walkway design parallel to it).

Design #4

I wanted to see how the menu would look when place upright on the counter, but I still prefer design #1. I moved the display cabinet to the corner, so that it was more visible to the eye rather than placing them on the edges.

Design #5: Accumulating what I liked from Design #1-4 to create my final design

  • Menu (Design #1) – Magnetic Letter Board, easy to apply to the wall and interacts more with the space through shadows. I chose to use black as it is straightforward and stands out on a white wall
  • Shelves (Design #2) – Adding acrylic light tape to the shelves to illuminate them would draw attention to the wall, rather than only focusing on the eye level of the booth
  • Counter (Design #3) – I liked how the LED strips align with the walkway design (and having the horizontal lights would tie the menu and shelf design together) However I would like to take inspiration from an image used in Design #4 to give more shape to the counter
  • Display Cabinet (Design #4) – Corner Cabinet, as it is the best area to display products (not hidden away from either sides)
  • I also decided to add a small seating area so there is the option of sitting in the space rather than just standing around
