Model Making: The Process + Considering Materials

Materials used:

  • Foamboard (foundation & structure, the sliding door and the platforms)
  • Thin cardboard (lining the walls and the stairs, window frames, sliding door frame)
  • Thick cardboard (floor)
  • Reflective paper (platforms)
  • PVA glue
  • Masking tape (underneath the structure for extra support)
I started off by making the walls of the building. I added an extra layer of foamboard on the outer wall to thicken the wall, as opposed to the inner wall.
The initial model with the inclusion of the hallway (and the addition of sliding doors).
I started making the platforms out of foamboard and thin cardboard, later applying a layer of reflective paper on top.
The model WITH the platforms included (nothing is stuck down yet).
I eventually took out the hallway as it was not relevant to my intervention, and wanted to make the divided spaces a little more equal.
I cut a slanted angle from foamboard to mimic the slope the gallery is sitting on. This is the foundation of my model, where I plan to put the model above this layer. I also put down a thick cardboard to make the model easier to stand.
The final structure for the foundation.
Assembling the interior of the gallery, where i stuck the platform and the sliding doors in.

Upon making this model, I thought about what materials I would consider using in Project 3. Although I would like to keep most of the materials already used in the gallery, I wanted to make some changes to material use, while also minimalising the variation. I would be interested in using wood for the floor or for the sliding door frames, to bring in a much warmer and welcoming atmosphere into the space. The concrete that is in the gallery makes it feel cold and uninviting.
